Captain Steve’s Path to a Life on the Water

As I got older, I realized what I enjoyed most wasn’t just catching fish — it was sharing the experience. Helping someone feel that first head shake. Coaching a new angler through their first cast. Watching a seasoned fisherman light up when a technique finally clicks. That’s what pulled me toward guiding, and it’s what keeps me excited every single day.

My journey on the water started long before I ever thought about guiding. I grew up chasing salmon and steelhead on the rivers of the Pacific Northwest, learning the rhythms of the water, the seasons, and the fish long before I learned anything else. Over the years, that early love turned into a deep respect for the craft — the patience, the problem‑solving, the quiet moments, and the rush when everything finally comes together.

In The Zone was built around that feeling. It’s not just a business to me — it’s the way I get to pass on the passion that shaped my life. Whether I’m teaching fundamentals, dialing in advanced techniques, or simply creating a memorable day on the water, my goal is always the same: give every guest the kind of experience that made me fall in love with fishing in the first place.
